Fair Trade Coffee

The United States consumes one-fifth of the world's coffee, making it the largest consumer in the world. But few Americans realize the amount of labor involved in producing coffee. Fair Trade assures consumers that the coffee we drink was produced and purchased under fair conditions. To become Fair Trade certified, an importer must meet stringent international criteria; paying a minimum price per pound and providing technical assistance such as help transitioning to organic farming. Fair Trade for coffee farmers means community development, health, education, and environmental stewardship.

Organic Coffee

Organic coffee is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water. Organic coffee is produced without using conventional pesticides. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a government-approved certifier inspects the coffee farm to ensure compliance with USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic coffee must be certified as well.
