What method of decaffeination do you use?

All of our decaffeinated coffees use natural decaffeination processes. Generally this means that we are using either CO2 or Water Processes. You have our pledge that we will never sell a chemical processed decaf. Is it safe? Yes. Because we use either water or CO2 based decaffeination methods, any additional decaffeinating agent (carbonated water or CO2) simply dissipates into the air upon returning to “normal” conditions.

Why don’t you have Jamaica Blue Mountain? Isn’t that the best coffee on the market?

At the risk of offending Jamaicans, probably not. It is one of the more expensive coffees on the market, but “best” is always up to preference. Truth be known, there are many coffees that score better (by coffee experts) and have an exponentially greater value. Jamaica perennially exports some great coffee, but so a dozen other countries. We have chosen to highlight those coffees, because we believe they are a better value and just as good, if not better, quality.

Why isn’t the coffee I ordered last time available?

We do our best to keep our offerings fairly consistent. However, we buy based primarily on quality and harvest season. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that an offering you received previously will always be there. What we can guarantee is that we are tireless in our pursuit of the world’s finest coffees. So while it might not bear the same name as the last order, it will be every bit as stellar. If you are hoping to match a previously available offering, let us know—we’ll assist in choosing an equivalent.

Is the coffee shade-grown?

The short answer is that yes, most of our coffee is shade grown. The longer answer is that we can’t verify that 100% of it is, but that good and sustainable coffee is shade grown because it’s better for the coffee and the longevity of the plants. So, when you buy at the quality level we do, it is almost certain to be shade grown.

Why don’t you offer flavored coffees like hazelnut, chocolate mint, etc?

Utopian Coffee believes that truly world-class coffees don’t need flavoring additives. Coffee possesses roughly four times the number of flavor compounds as red wine. When properly brewed, it has the potential to be deeply complex and satisfying without any external flavors.  Additionally, the flavorings are typically high in sugars and quite unhealthy.

Why aren’t all of your coffees Fair Trade and Certified Organic?

Fair Trade is a good program. It has done much to raise consumer awareness of the historical exploitation of labor in the coffee industry. It (Fair Trade) has also been the catalyst in the creation of many health clinics, schools, potable wells, income diversification programs, etc. at various coffee growing/processing co-ops around the world. For this reason, Utopian Coffee Co. is a licensed Fair Trade retailer.

However, Fair Trade is structured in such a way that certain farms, despite equitable treatment of workers, will never be eligible for Fair Trade status. Family owned estates, for instance, cannot become Fair Trade certified because they are not cooperatives. Therefore, we at UTOPIAN Coffee Co. have chosen to expand our coffees beyond exclusively Fair Trade Certified offerings.

We are committed to buying only the very finest green coffees from around the world. To achieve the level of quality we require, farmers must work with the most competent harvesters and processors. This level of work-quality commands a better wage and fairer treatment. Therefore, simply by committing to buy only the very best coffees, companies like Utopian go a long way toward ensuring that their coffees are ethically sourced. It would be naive and irresponsible though, to stop there. Thus, we have achieved our Fair Trade Certification and created partnerships like the one with Run for Congo Women (Women for Women International), as well as the work we’re doing with the all-female owned coffee farm in Rwanda, and a program in Colombia where we’re helping to support the eradication of cocaine farms in order to convert them to coffee plantations. We are committed to social justice, because for us coffee is a luxury, but for them coffee is a livelihood.

Another important aspect of coffee stewardship is environmental and ecological responsibility. To that end, we are also Organic Certified. However, it is important to note that many conventional, or non-organic coffees, are grown sustainably. The level of coffee quality necessary to meet Utopian standards is such that it requires years of meticulous care for the land, careful tree selection, and deliberate pruning. The farms from which we source our coffee are long-established, sustainable operations. It behooves a quality-conscious farmer to tend his land carefully in order to produce ever-finer harvests. Simplified, we partner with growers who are in quality coffee for the long haul, and those farmers must care for their land in order to provide for their families long-term. Therefore, upon achieving our Organic Certification, we feature certified organic coffees, however, we don’t restrict ourselves to exclusively organics, as we want you to have the best selection possible, not just from the farmers who can afford to pay for the certifications.

Is small batch roasting more beneficial?

Roasting in small batches allows unparalleled attention to the details of your order and obsessive quality control. This small volume affords us the opportunity to meticulously monitor coffee selection and roasting. Prior to roasting we comb each batch to ensure that any defect beans are removed; ensuring clean, discernible flavors in your cup. Such a small batch is also far more responsive to minor adjustments during the roasting process. To simplify it, we can finesse a small batch during the roasting process. Larger roasters simply lack the ability to tightly control all variables during the roast.

How does the price of Utopian Coffee compare to others?

Utopian Coffee is a tremendous value! It is less expensive than it’s direct competitors, either the online coffee aggregators or the boutique craft coffee roasters, like Intelligentsia or Counter Culture. When compared to Starbucks, it is less expensive than their Reserve coffees and a bit more than their standard line, but much fresher and the quality isn’t even comparable.

We’ve created Utopian Coffee to be an “Approachable Luxury”; Quality that makes it feel like a “special occasion,” but priced well enough that you can drink it every day!
