In 2018 Utopian Coffee began sourcing small quantities of coffee from the good people of the Long Miles Coffee Project. Founded in 2013 by Ben and Christy Carlson, Long Miles has worked tirelessly to improve the livelihoods of coffee farmers in Burundi through agricultural and technological assistance. During the harvest season, the Long Miles “Coffee Scouts” visit small communities such as Gaharo, training farmers on best practices for picking only the ripest cherries, while also monitoring soil health and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
As part of their philosophy, Long Miles is currently planting shade trees throughout all of the communities they work in. To date, they’ve planted more than 27,000 shade trees to promote biodiversity and soil conservation. These efforts have greatly impacted the quality of coffees being produced by these communities and are helping fight the effects of climate change.
Long Miles continues to be one of the most progressive and innovative companies that Utopian is able to support, and we’re excited to see what the future holds as they continue to work in Burundi, Kenya, and Uganda.
