COFFEE INFO

Burundi continues to be one of the most interesting countries we source coffee from. Coffees from this unique context display unparalleled levels of clarity, brightness, and sweetness, with structure and complexity that rivals the neighboring coffee producing power-house, Ethiopia.

This particular coffee comes to us from the farmers of Gaharo, one of the many communities working with our friends at the Long Miles Coffee Project. Gaharo was the first community that Long Miles worked with, and because of the consistent reinvestment and training provided by their team, the coffees from this area sing with bright and expressive flavors reminiscent of tropical and stone fruits! Farmers from this community deliver coffee to the Buckeye Wet Mill (Washing Station) where the Long Miles team receives ripe coffee cherries picked daily by the local farmers.

In the cup, we taste flavors of fresh Apricot, followed by hints of Raspberry, with soft thyme, sage, and clover honey in the finish. All of this is enveloped in an intense rock-candy-like sweetness and an intensely structured texture.

PARTNERSHIP

In 2018 Utopian Coffee began sourcing small quantities of coffee from the good people of the Long Miles Coffee Project. Founded in 2013 by Ben and Christy Carlson, Long Miles has worked tirelessly to improve the livelihoods of coffee farmers in Burundi through agricultural and technological assistance. During the harvest season, the Long Miles “Coffee Scouts” visit small communities such as Gaharo, training farmers on best practices for picking only the ripest cherries, while also monitoring soil health and promoting sustainable environmental practices.

As part of their philosophy, Long Miles is currently planting shade trees throughout all of the communities they work in. To date, they’ve planted more than 27,000 shade trees to promote biodiversity and soil conservation. These efforts have greatly impacted the quality of coffees being produced by these communities and are helping fight the effects of climate change.

Long Miles continues to be one of the most progressive and innovative companies that Utopian is able to support, and we’re excited to see what the future holds as they continue to work in Burundi, Kenya, and Uganda.
