Nothing says spring like flowers extravagantly blossoming and lively clovers popping through the earth, especially after a brutal Midwestern winter. To us, this simple miracle deserves a blend of its own.

Clover & Blossom is our ode to springtime and the new life that’s flourishing everywhere around us! This blend features two seasonally fresh coffees, both bursting forth with flavors reminiscent of a beautiful spring day.

First is a lovely coffee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mapendo, which means “Love” in Swahili, precisely sums up how we feel about this coffee. We taste lots of lemon and stone fruit flavors, with a hearty backbone of mulling spices.

We’ve combined this with one of our favorite coffees of all time: Felix Mundaca. We were lucky enough to visit Felix during our trip to Peru in September of 2021, and his coffee immediately stood out to us for its combination of crisp citrus and red fruit flavors, with a finish like toffee and tea.

Together, these two coffees create a blend that presents exactly what we look for in a springtime cup of coffee. Expect full and fresh citrus tones, with subtle springtime herbs and earthy-terroir in the finish.

PARTNERSHIP

Both of these coffees come to us through wonderful sourcing partners who are making a real difference in the world.

Origin Coffee Lab – We began working with Origin Coffee Lab about 3 years ago, and we’ve received nothing but amazing results from our partnership. OCL operates in northern Peru, working with a variety of farmers, ranging from the small and newly-introduced to specialty coffee production, to professional level farms that offer phenomenal quality. In everything they do, OCL puts people first – not only paying much higher prices to farmers but also offering technical and agricultural assistance to farmers who are a part of their Cafe Solidario program. We were amazed by what we saw during our trip -deep partnerships and a dedication to the details at every step of the process.

Mighty Peace – The Democratic Republic of the Congo has long been a country we’ve wanted to source from. Nearly 10 years ago, Utopian Coffee’s founder, Brendon Maxwell, visited the DRC with hopes of establishing a direct relationship with a cooperative. Unfortunately, upon arrival, Brendon found that the cooperative was not treating farmers fairly, and this paused our pursuit of DRC coffee until we were able to ethically source.

Fast forward to 2021, and we’ve begun to source a modest amount of coffee from the good people at Mighty Peace. Founded out of a desire to spread peace and create sustainable income for coffee farmers, Mighty Peace continues to surprise us with their ingenuity and servant-leadership approach to specialty coffee. We anticipate a lot of good things coming from these folks in the future, and we’re happy to be able to support the women farmers of Mapendo.
