COFFEE INFO

Situated in the heart of Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo shares a border with several coffee-producing nations we’ve featured in the past: Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda. This area has all of the necessary conditions to produce distinctive, stunning coffees. While Ethiopian and Kenyan coffees are well recognized, coffees from the DRC tend to go unappreciated despite the nuance and complexity they display in the cup.

Mapendo, which translates to “Love” in Swahili, is a 100% woman-produced coffee. that’ll make you wonder why you haven’t tried coffee from the DRC before. This coffee displays exactly what we love about coffee: bright citric acidity with a mixture of dried fruit tones (think fruit leather), molasses-like sweetness, and complex baking spices in the finish.

This coffee features the SL34 variety which originated from a single estate in Kenya. In the 1930’s, Scott Agricultural Laboratories selected 42 different coffee tree varieties and tested their tolerances to drought, disease, and pests. SL34 and SL28 were two varieties chosen for their heartiness. We find these two varieties are still grown in Kenya, as well as the DRC, Uganda, and Tanzania. This specific variety has very high cup potential and provides us with the distinct stone fruit and sugary flavors we love!

PARTNERSHIP

Back in 2013 our founder, Brendon Maxwell traveled to the DRC in hopes of establishing a sourcing relationship with a group of washing stations in the region. He quickly learned that the farmers working for this group were being horribly exploited by the supervisors that managed the transactional aspects of the washing stations. Very little of the value created by the farmers was ever returned to them, leading to rampant poverty and violence within coffee producing communities.

Sadly, these harmful systems are still commonplace in the DRC’s coffee industry. Additionally, mass sums of coffee are now being smuggled to neighboring countries. Though our urge to purchase coffee from this largely untapped region has never diminished, we’ve been unable to identify a trustworthy sourcing partner that would fairly distribute the value of the coffee to the farmers that made it possible. That is, until now.
