Back in 2013 our founder, Brendon Maxwell traveled to the DRC in hopes of establishing a sourcing relationship with a group of washing stations in the region. He quickly learned that the farmers working for this group were being horribly exploited by the supervisors that managed the transactional aspects of the washing stations. Very little of the value created by the farmers was ever returned to them, leading to rampant poverty and violence within coffee producing communities.
Sadly, these harmful systems are still commonplace in the DRC’s coffee industry. Additionally, mass sums of coffee are now being smuggled to neighboring countries. Though our urge to purchase coffee from this largely untapped region has never diminished, we’ve been unable to identify a trustworthy sourcing partner that would fairly distribute the value of the coffee to the farmers that made it possible. That is, until now.
