COFFEE INFO

Honduras has long been overlooked and under-appreciated within the context of specialty coffee. In the past, coffees from this country were seen as “lesser” versions of Guatemalan coffee and were regularly smuggled across the border into Guatemala to be sold for much higher prices. In effect, many amazing Honduran coffees producers have gone unrecognized for their work.

We strive to actively change the narrative around Honduran coffee, and to invest in its potential. In 2020 we began sourcing Honduran coffees with Benjamin Paz of San Vincente and Kevin Bohlin of Saint Frank Coffee, who came together to begin the Bonaventure Coffee Project. Benjamin has long stood as one of the premier figures in Honduran specialty coffee. His company, Beneficio San Vincente, has helped elevate the quality of Honduran coffee and bring visibility to the farmers who’ve long been ignored. Through this new project, Benjamin and Kevin have sought to bring even greater visibility to up-and-coming coffee farmers.

We’re proud to be a link in a strong supply chain that values the work of Honduran coffee farmers. This is our second harvest working with Bonaventure, and we expect to continue this partnership in the new harvest, which has just begun.

PARTNERSHIP

Andres Fernandez is one of the foremost producers of specialty coffee in Honduras. He has long produced outstanding quality coffees, and we were excited (and lucky) to have snagged a couple of bags of his legendary honey Parainema lot.

Andres’ father purchased land for a coffee farm in 1967, and by the age of 15 Andres’ had already begun overseeing his own plot of coffee trees on the property. In 1970 he married his wife, Mirna Judith Lopez, and asked his father for some of the property so he could begin his own coffee farm.

In 2008 Andres heard about one of his neighbors participating in the Cup of Excellence competition, which takes place annually to highlight the best coffee producer in Honduras (as well as many other coffee producing nations). In 2009 several members of the San Vincente team helped Andres learn about producing specialty quality coffee, and he entered his micro lot in the Cup of Excellence competition and received 15th place. Following this amazing achievement, buyers from around the world began to specifically request coffee from Andres, helping his farm grow by leaps and bounds. Today, Andres continues to refine his practices, and now produces honey-fermented coffees, resulting in wild and complex flavor profiles.
