Post 8/29/2021 HOPE International Facebook: Aline (pictured above) knew that unless she could find a way to provide for herself and Queen, they would face a life of poverty and few options. She was also spiritually in a desolate place: “I felt lonely, and it was a sad life with no hope.” Click to read more of Aline’s story.

Who is Hope International?

The info below is based on excerpts from the HOPE International website.

Following the fall of the Soviet Union in Ukraine in the early 1990s, Jeff Rutt, a Lancaster, Pennsylvania-based home builder, traveled to Ukraine numerous times with his church, transporting containers of food, clothing, and medical supplies to the city of Zaporizhzhia.

After several of these visits, a local pastor pulled Jeff aside and told him honestly that the shipments were not helping; the well-intentioned aid shipments were actually doing more harm than good by depressing local industry and initiative.

Jeff returned from the trip with a strong drive to find a solution. He plunged into research and eventually discovered the concept of economic development, then a little-known poverty alleviation strategy.

Fast forward to today, and HOPE is serving in 16 countries to help communities create jobs and build thriving marketplaces. HOPE provides training, initiates savings groups, and directly lends to entrepreneurs and small-and-medium enterprises to equip individuals to break the cycle of poverty.

PARTNER INFO

The two coffee components in HOPE Blend come to us through wonderful sourcing partners who are making a real difference in the world.

Origin Coffee Lab – We began working with Origin Coffee Lab about three years ago, and we’ve received nothing but amazing results from our partnership. OCL operates in northern Peru, working with a variety of farmers, ranging from the small and newly introduced to specialty coffee production to professional level farms that offer phenomenal quality. In everything they do, OCL puts people first – not only paying much higher prices to farmers but also offering technical and agricultural assistance to farmers who are a part of their Cafe Solidario program. We were amazed by what we saw during our trip – deep partnerships and a dedication to the details at every step of the process.

Mighty Peace – The Democratic Republic of the Congo has long been a country we’ve wanted to source from. Nearly ten years ago, Utopian Coffee’s founder, Brendon Maxwell, visited the DRC with hopes of establishing a direct relationship with a cooperative. Unfortunately, upon arrival, Brendon found that the cooperative was not treating farmers fairly, and this paused our pursuit of DRC coffee until we were able to ethically source.

Fast forward to 2021, and we began to source coffee from the good people at Mighty Peace. Founded out of a desire to spread peace and create sustainable income for coffee farmers, Mighty Peace continues to surprise us with its ingenuity and servant-leadership approach to specialty coffee. We anticipate a lot of good things coming from these folks in the future, and we’re happy to be able to support the women farmers of Mapendo.
