COFFEE INFO

Carolina Garcia Perez is a woman farmer who regularly provides coffee to the Ozolotepec Community.

This year, Carolina was selected to produce a microlot specifically for Utopian Coffee using Head Roaster Nick Brehany’s fermentation recommendations.

This lot consists of Typica Pluma and Bourbon varieties. Like Alba Flores, another Ozoloptepec microlot provider that we are featuring this year, Carolina was paid a significant premium to cover the cost of production and to reward her diligent work and care.

In the cup, we’re experiencing tastes of inviting nut-butters with tones of lemon pecan shortbread and black-tea.

PARTNERSHIP

Santa Cruz Ozolotepec is one of the major producing communities in Oaxaca. Ozolotepec consists of numerous coffee farmers scattered throughout the Sierra Sur mountain ranges. The average farm size is around 2 acres, which, combined with lower-yielding Typica variety trees, leads to lower overall volumes being produced by farmers in this area. This makes for high competition amongst coffee roasters who are hoping to source the best lots from Oaxaca.

Through our partnership with Cari Coffee, Utopian Coffee can secure amazing coffees from Oaxaca well before most other roasters have the opportunity to select lots. Additionally, we have been able to build direct relationships with two community farmers (Alba Flores and Carolina Garcia) whose microlots we are featuring this year. The direct connection with these farmers allows us to communicate about processing techniques that increase quality and therefore prices paid for Alba and Carolina’s coffee. We are excited for many more harvests to come with Ozolotepec producers!
