Exploring an Emerging Coffee Origin
Utopian continues to be fascinated by and invested in emerging origins. While it’s great to partner with producers and source from stalwarts such as Guatemala, Colombia, and Ethiopia (which we do!), there is a grittiness and opportunity to help producers truly move the needle in many of these lesser known countries. As part of that growing initiative, Brendon just returned from the beautiful nation of Timor-Leste (aka East Timor). As Asia's newest country—gaining independence from Indonesia in 2002—and with a population of just 1.4 million people, Timor-Leste remains a relatively unknown gem within the specialty coffee world. While neighboring islands like Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Java have become familiar names on coffee bags and café menus, Timor-Leste is quietly emerging as an origin that punches well above its weight class.
Meeting Daniel Leong and Kape Diem
He visited Daniel Leong of Kape Diem, one of the pioneering specialty coffee companies in Timor-Leste. Daniel is a fascinating figure in the country's coffee story. Born in Australia to Timorese parents who fled during the war in search of safety and stability, he returned to his homeland sixteen years ago. Coffee wasn't initially his calling, but once he was introduced to it, he immersed himself completely.
Today, Daniel serves as President of ACT (the Coffee Association of Timor), is a certified Q Grader, and is actively helping train the next generation of coffee professionals throughout the country. His passion for raising the quality and reputation of Timorese coffee is contagious.
Discovering the Potential of Timorese Coffee
Brendon joined Daniel and his team for a cupping. One of his colleagues, Miledis, who is also a certified Q Grader, walked through several microlots they had been developing. The coffees displayed a level of clarity, sweetness, and complexity that could compete with any coffee in the region.
Beyond operating retail establishments, Daniel and his team have built a washing station and, through relationships with local producers, established Orijem Timor—a social enterprise committed to building a stronger, more sustainable coffee industry throughout the country.
Investing in Coffee-Growing Communities
Brendon traveled into the coffee-growing regions, where he witnessed several Farmers Resource Centers established to support local producers. These centers are much more than simple buildings. They serve as hubs for education, technical training, improved planting materials, and agricultural resources designed to help farmers increase both quality and yield. It was encouraging to see organizations investing not simply in buying coffee, but in equipping growers with the tools and knowledge needed to improve their livelihoods for generations to come.
A Conversation About Hope
Brendon had a lot of meaningful experiences on this trip, but one evening stands above the rest:
“Invited to dinner by a fellow coffee professional, I found myself seated with four remarkable people. One was from Sumatra, another from Bali, another from India, and another from Colombia. Each had taken a completely different path to arrive in Timor-Leste. Their stories, religions (Muslim, Protestant, Hindu, and Catholic), cultures, and experiences couldn't have been more diverse.
Yet every one of them shared the same conviction. Each believed deeply in the potential of the Timorese people. Each believed this young nation has an opportunity to build something truly special. And each believed that coffee—when grown well, processed thoughtfully, and traded sustainably—can become far more than an agricultural product. It can strengthen families, create opportunity, preserve the environment, and contribute to the long-term flourishing of an entire country. As I listened to their stories around the table, I realized this wasn't simply a conversation about coffee. It was a conversation about hope.
Those moments remind me why I continue to travel to coffee-producing countries after all these years. Yes, I'm passionate about finding exceptional coffees. But more than that, I'm continually reminded that behind every great cup, people are investing their lives in something much bigger than themselves, and that's what keeps me so deeply drawn to exploring these remote places throughout the globe.”

Timor-Leste may still be one of the world's lesser-known coffee origins today, but after spending time with the producers, educators, entrepreneurs, and visionaries working there, Brendon left feeling convinced it won't remain that way forever.
